Commonly known as the pink velvet bush, Lasiopetalum behrii display’s attractive pendulous star-shaped flowers, reddish-brown petals and a calyx that is white on the outside and pink on the inside during the spring and summer months. Flowers care covered in small soft hair hence the name Velvet Bush.

Forms the habit of a small rounded shrub to 1 to 1.5 metres high with a similar width with narrow foliage between 4 and 9 cm long

A member of the Malvaceae family of planes which contain also  contain Alcea (hollyhock), Malva (mallow) and Lavatera (tree mallow) and over 300 species of Hibiscus.

Prefers a light to medium soil in a protected sunny or semi-shaded position.

Occurs in the southern parts of Western Australia, South Australia, Victoria and New South Wales.
Listed as critically endangered under the Threatened Species Conservation Act in New South Wales.

Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C for this species.

  1. Soak seed overnight in water.
  2. Sow seed on surface of a porous seed raising mix. The seed will lodge in the the pores of the mix once watered.
  3. Sprinkle a very light covering of the seed raising mix over the seed if required to hold the seed in place. Do not bury seed deeply.
  4. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  5. Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out.
  6. Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix.
  7. Germination generally occurs in around 21-42 days in the right conditions.

General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
