An upright evergreen shrub with attractive pink to orange globe shaped flower-heads turning crimson with age to 8 cm in diameter. Flower heads occur between August and November with crimson heads persisting until January.
Occurring in only one location in the Western Cape Province of South African it is critically endangered in the wild.
Leucospermum (Pincushion, Pincushion Protea or Leucospermum) is a genus of flowering plants with 48 known species native to Zimbabwe and South Africa, where they occupy a variety of habitats, including scrub, forest, and mountain slopes.
Leucospermum are evergreen shrubs growing to 0.5-5 m tall. The leaves are spirally arranged, tough and leathery, simple, linear to lanceolate, 2-12 cm long and 0.5-3 cm broad, with a serrated margin or serrated at the leaf apex only. The flowers are produced in dense inflorescences, which have large numbers of prominent styles, which inspires the name.
The genus is closely related in evolution and appearance to the Australian genus Banksia.
The best time to sow is usually autumn or spring when the temperature range is between 16-22°C and there is difference of day and night temperatures of around 12°C.
If your summer is hot and dry and your winter is moderate and wet the best time to sow is autumn.
In colder climates with less harsh summers it is usually better to sow in spring.
- The growing medium should be well draining but should remain damp between watering.
- Sow the seed the depth on the seed size. Vermiculite is a good medium to use to cover the surface as it helps retain moisture and controls the temperature.
- Keep moist but not too wet as the seed may rot. Do not let the growing mix completely dry out.
- Germination should occur in 21-60 days depending on the temperature and conditions.
Pre-treatment of smoke is recommended:
Members of the Proteaceae are responsive to pre-treatment of smoke. Although germination will often occur without smoke treatment it has proved to be beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates in many species of the Proteaceae family
