Lobelia is a genus of over 300 species in many parts of the world, especially tropical and subtropical regions of North America, southern Africa and Australia.
There are about 20 species native to Australia, occurring in all states. All but one, Lobelia anceps occur only in Australia.
Lobelia anceps is a small perennial herb with a trailing habit but sometimes erect to about 30 centimetres high.
The attractive small blue to mauve flowers are around 75 mm long and are two-lipped; the upper lip comprises two lobes, and the lower lip comprises three lobes.
Flowering occurs in Summer and Autumn, but sporadic flowering may occur at other times.
The small leaves are narrowly elliptical, 6 cm long, and angled at the base, hence the common name Angled lobelia.
A hardy plant in sheltered locations that are preferably frost-free and will tolerate dense shade.
This versatile plant can thrive in various types of moist soils, including dark brown-black sandy loam, grey sand, wet brown peaty sand, ironstone gravel, granite, and limestone. It grows well in flat to sloping landscapes, on hillsides, near wetlands, along watercourses, and beside riverbanks.
Lobelia anceps occurs in Southern Australia in moist, sheltered areas such as swampy heaths.
