An aquatic perennial native to southern Asia and Australia, this species is intimately linked with the Buddhist religion, symbolising vitality and purity. A 1,288-year-old seed of this species collected from an ancient lakebed in China is the oldest terminable seed on record.
Along with its ornamental value, this plant is cultivated for food and traditional Chinese medicine. Virtually all parts of the plant can be eaten.
Quickly grown from seed.
To grow the Nelumbo nucifera Sacred Lotus, scuff one side of the seed with sandpaper or rub it on a concrete surface until a slight white colour is visible, then place the seed in water. This process allows the seed to absorb moisture and start germinating.
The Sacred Lotus seed should swell over the next day or two, sprout within a week, and grow quickly for the following couple of weeks.
Sow the seeds in pots 2-3 cm deep and place them in water, raising the water level as the plants grow.
The Nelumbo nucifera seed contains enough nutrients to support the plant for 30 days, but it's advisable to plant it as soon as possible. Plant it in a pot with plenty of room for root growth, both below and around the seed (at least 100 cm), and place it in water with the top of the pot positioned between 30-40 cm below the water surface. The leaves will quickly grow upwards, searching for the surface, and the plant should bloom in the second growing season.
