Seeds from different species of lupins have been consumed as food for over 3,000 years around the Mediterranean and as long as 6,000 years in the Andes.
Lupin Hartwegii is an annual variety of lupin that grow to 70 centermetres tall and characterised by its long, flower-spiked stems that brightens any garden with a stunning display of a colourful mix of pastel shdes of pinks, whites, mauves and blues. It looks best when planted in groups.
Useful for cut flowers with their big pastel shades colours.
A wonderful addition to garden beds and looks spectacular planted when massed.
Propagating Lupins from seed is easy if you follow these growing notes.
Cool climates: March to May or September to November.
Temperate climates: March to May or August to October.
Sub-Tropical climates: March to May or August to October.
Tropical climates: Not recommended
Arid climates: April to June.
Soaking seeds 2- 3 days (changing the water daily) before planting may improve the speed and success of germination.
Seeds can be directly in the garden, fifteen millimetres deep and fifty centimetres apart.
If growing in containers:
Seeds should typically germinate in around 15-60 days at a soil temperature of 12-22°C.
Plant out seedlings fifty centimetres apart when the last frost has passed.
