Mulga Bluebush

Mulga bluebush grows 0-5 to 2m tall with robust stems, and flexible new growth. The branchlets of the new growth are covered with fine hairs that are alternate, becoming pointed towards the tips. They are up to 2cm long, 1–2mm thick.
Small flowers are held between the leaf base and the stems.
An important indicator of good pasture conditions. A valuable forage plant that only loses its leaves under severe moisture stress. Provides a source of protein when the annual feed has dried.
Occurs naturally in the arid regions of Augustus, Carnegie, Eastern Murchison, Geraldton Hills, Tallering, Trainor, Western Murchison and Wooramel in Western Australia.
Prefers light to medium well-drained soil in an open sunny position, drought and frost resistant.
Grow notes:
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C
- Sow seed on the surface of a porous seed-raising mix.
- Sprinkle a light covering of the seed-raising mix over the seed.
- Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
- Place in a warm shaded or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.
- Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix.
- Germination generally occurs in around 21-35 days in the right condition.
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they are discarded.
