Small shrub with an unusual flat top, branches are usually horizontal and layered which gives plants their flat topped appearance. The bark is papery and sometimes corky.
The oval to heart shaped leaves are pale green to greyish-green. Profuse violet or purple flowers occur in clusters on terminal globular heads on short lateral branches appearing from September to December.
Endemic to the south coast of southwest Western Australia.
Prefers a light to medium well-drained soil in an open sunny position, drought and frost resistant.
Propagation is easy from seed.
Melaleuca seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
If growing in containers:
Sow on surface of the growing mix.
Germination generally occurs in around 14-28 days at 18-22°C
Sow directly for re-vegetation projects.
