Bells of Ireland is a lightly scented plant with large white veined green bells that cling closely to stems that are not really flowers but enlarged calyxes, the true flowers, tiny, fragrant, and white, deep within the bells.

Bells-of-Ireland makes interesting and long-lasting cut flowers, that have additional value as dried flowers for winter arrangements.

Moluccella Plants grow best in full sun but tolerate some shade and poor soils if very well-drained. In hot, humid climates and is grown as a winter annual. Reseeds readily.

Adaptable to most well-drained soil types in a protected sunny position.

Moluccella laevis, commonly called Bells of Ireland is a summer flowering annual, native to Turkey, Syria and the Caucasus.

Moluccella seeds are small, it is best to sow them on the surface firm them down and keep them moist.

  1. Best sown in trays or containers just below the surface and cover lightly.
  2. If sowing in trays and transplant when large enough to handle.
  3. If mass planting as a meadow scatter seeds and rake over.

Tropical: Autumn to Mid-Winter.
Temperate: Late Winter to Mid-Spring or Late Summer to Autumn.
Cool climate: Early-Mid spring or Late summer to Mid Autumn.

Plant in well-drained soil in a sunny position.

Germination: 14-28 days at soil temperture of 15-18⁰C

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
