During summer the West Australian Christmas Tree  becomes covered in spectacular golden flowers which occur in clusters on branched inflorescences and which occur from October to December.

Nuytsia is a monotypic genus which occurs naturally only in the South-West Province of Western Australia and is the largest member of the mistletoe family worldwide.

Prefers a light sandy well-drained soil in a sunny or partially shade position, drought and frost resistant.

Although seed can be sown most of the year in Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C for this species.

Germinates readily from Seed.

  1. Soak seed overnight in water
  2. Sow seed longest side down on surface of a porous seed raising mix.
  3. Cover to a depth of 4-5 mm
  4. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  5. Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out.
  6. Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix.
  7. Germination generally occurs in around 10-21 days in the right conditions.

General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
