A fast-growing perennial the Showy Primrose produces probably the best flowers of all Evening Primroses. The large fragrant pink crepe-textured flowers with centres that open on summer evenings, fading the next day to soft pink.
This rhizomatous spreader can form large patches but can be excellent for roadside beautification or meadows when planted on mass.
A good choice for the rock garden or as border edging containers and pots.
Especially suited to hot, dry sites with well-drained soil. A hardy plant will self-sow readily.
Adaptable to most soils and conditions providing it is in a sunny position, drought tolerant once established.
Oenothera speciosa was originally native to the United States of America in the grasslands of Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, northeastern New Mexico, Oklahoma and Texas.

Oenothera seed is best sown directly in their growing position.
- Best sown 1 mm directly where they are to grow, do not bury seed deeply as they requires a degree light to germinate. Keep warm and moist but not too wet.
- If sowing in trays transplant when large enough to handle.
- If mass planting scatter seeds and rake over at a rate of 0.5g per m2
Tropical: Autumn.
Temperate: Spring & Summer.
Cold: Mid-spring to Mid-summer.
Germination: 14-21 days @ 18-21°C
Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for more vigorous plants.

- Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
- As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
