Okra, also known as Lady’s Fingers is a versatile and tasty vegetable that produces high yields of pods. Growing to around 10 cm long the dark green pods can be eaten parboiled, fried, roasted, or added to stews, soups, and curries. Pods can be used fresh or dried.
Okra plants are not only useful for their edible pods, but they also make great ornamentals that are easy to grow.
Grow notes:
Adaptable to most garden soils but prefers light well-drained, well-fed soil in a sunny position.
Tropical: Late Winter, Spring, and Summer.
Temperate: Spring and Early Summer.
Cold: Late Spring and Early Summer.
Sow: 5mm deep.
Grow in trays of a good seed-raising mix or sow direct where they are to grow
Germination: 8-14 days.
Plant space: 60 cm
Row space: 100 cm
Maturity: 15-20 weeks
Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants.
