Oregano is a hardy perennial herb that is native to Europe and Asia. It has the ability to form a spreading mat in the garden and its light pink flowers attract honey bees and beneficial insects. Oregano prefers full sun and is heat and drought-tolerant, making it a great choice for growing in containers

In terms of culinary uses, oregano is a versatile herb that features prominently in Mediterranean dishes. It can be used to add flavour to a variety of dishes such as tomato-based sauces, eggs, gravies, pasta, vegetables, meat, fish, and seafood. Both fresh and dried forms of oregano are extremely flavorful, with fresh oregano being sweeter and less pungent than dried oregano. Oregano goes particularly well with tomatoes and olive oil, making it the perfect seasoning for pizza.

In Italian cooking, oregano is a popular herb and is often sprinkled on bruschetta or included in marinades for grilled fish and meats. To dry oregano, simply remove the leaves from the plant and spread them on a cloth in the sun. After a few days, they will be dry and ready to store.

Adaptable to most good garden soils that are well-drained, prefers a sunny position.

The leaves can be harvested within 85 to 95 days before the flowers start to appear.

Oregano seeds can be sown 5mm deep directly in the garden or in trays and containers. If growing in trays use a quality seed-raising mix and transplant when Tropical: Autumn to Spring
