This award-winning peony-type poppy has unusual frilly blooms approximately 10-12cm wide. The large feathery black flowers are fully double.
An ideal bedding plant that is virtually maintenance-free. The plants have an unusual curly stem and the green seed pods are suitable for cutting and dried flower arrangements. Poppies are always more dramatic when planted in mass, a must for every spring garden. Self-sows freely.
Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils in an open sunny position. Tolerant to poor sandy soils and is drought and frost resistant.
Grow notes:
Tropical: Autumn to early winter.
Temperate: Late summer and autumn.
Cold: Late summer and early autumn.
Sow: 2-3mm deep, cover lightly and gently firm.
For best results sow directly into the soil where they are to grow. If grown early indoors use a growing container that can be planted directly into the soil such as jiffy pots as seedlings do not like root disturbance.
Germination: 10-14 days.
Plant space: 20-30cm
Flowering: 20 weeks
Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants.
