These large red flowers with black centres are unmistakable annuals. Today the red Flanders poppy remains a symbol of the war and its fallen heroes and is probably the world’s most popular wildflower because of its brilliant and striking colours as well as its ability to grow wild year after year.
Flanders poppies are a valuable component of wildflower and pollinator seed mixtures, as well as cottage gardens. Honeybees and other beneficial insects are attracted to the flowers for their pollen.
Poppies always look more dramatic when planted in mass, a must for every spring garden. Self-sows freely.
Adaptable to most well-drained garden soils in an open sunny position. Tolerant to poor sandy soils, drought, and frost resistance.
Papaver rhoeas poppies are native to Europe where they can be found in cultivated fields, meadows, and roadsides.
Seeds should be sown directly in the garden as they do not react well to being transplanted.

Temperate: Late summer and autumn.
