Pennisetum is one of the most ornamental native landscape grasses with gracefully arching mid to dark green leaves that grow 60-100cm long.
Feathery, yellow-green to dark purple bristle like spikelets on 60–100cm erect stems appear in summer to autumn.
The slender arching leaves create a linear texture and scale that contrasts other growth forms and adds character to every garden or landscape. This grass changes its appearance and colour throughout the growing season turning yellow in autumn after flowering.
Perennial tuft forming rhizomatous grass found in sub-tropical and warm temperate regions in parts of the eastern coast of Australia.
Adaptable to most moist soils that are free draining in a sunny or lightly shaded position. Tolerant to frost and poor soils.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C for this species.
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
