The Norway spruce is a large, fast-growing evergreen coniferous tree growing 35–55 metres tall with a trunk diameter of 1 to 1.5 metres.
It can grow quickly when young, reaching up to 1 metre per year for the first 25 years under optimal conditions, but its growth slows down once it exceeds 20 metres in height.
Picea abies, the Norway Spruce is the most wildly used spruce used as a Christmas tree in Europe.
The Norway spruce is more tolerant of hot weather than many conifers the Norway Spruce displays an attractive pyramidal habit with pendulous branchlets are also a very attractive feature of this spruce.
Stunning red cones decorate the tree during the months of spring before forming cones, which hold the seed
Picea abies have the largest cones of any spruce 9–17 cm long.
The blue-green foliage and symmetrical growth habit makes this an ideal pot plant or specimen tree. Fast growing in cool to moderate climates.
The tallest Norway Spruce was recorded at is 62.26 metres in Slovenia but are typically much smaller in cultivation.
Also popular in the art of bonsai.

The Norway spruce is found across Europe, ranging from Norway in the northwest to Poland in the east.
It also grows in the mountainous regions of central Europe, extending southwest to the western Alps and southeast through the Carpathians and Balkans, reaching the northern edge of Greece.
Its northernmost distribution lies in the Arctic, just north of 70° N in Norway.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring. Avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C
Cold stratification is recommended in climates with warm winters.
Cold treatment is not be critical for germination to occur in colder regions but should give increased germination rates.
This can be replicated by cold stratification in the refrigerator vegrtable draw for 4-6 weeks. Alternatively over wintering in the garden in cold climates will assist germination.
Germination generally occurs in 14-28 days when moved to warmer temperatures after the period of cold treatment.
