Commonly known as the Aleppo pine this attractive bonsai subject is an attractive fast growing, broadly domed tree with grey-brown bark that is persistent, deeply fissured and broken into broad scaly plates.

Colourful attractive female flower buds develop into typical pine cones starting as tight green cones turning brown often in clusters and sometimes remaining closed for several years before opening and releasing the seed.

A hardy tree that tolerates poor and saline soils as well as high winds in coastal locations. Drought tolerant.

Native to the Mediterranean region it extends over a large area from Morocco, Algeria and Spain north to southern France, Italy, Croatia, Montenegro, and Albania, and east to Greece, all over Malta and northern Tunisia, with an outlying population in Syria, Lebanon, southern Turkey, Jordan, Israel, and Palestinian territories.

Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C

Germinates readily without pre-treatment although keeping the seed in the for 2-3 weeks prior to sow may speed germinating time.

  1. Soak in water overnight.
  2. Sow seed the depth of the seed width.
  3. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  4. Ensure the mix is moist but not water logged.
  5. Place the container in plastic bag.
  6. Germination generally occurs in 21-42 days.

General note: Seeds of many plants are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
