An extremely attractive and variable coniferous shrub or rarely a small tree with one or more trunks with dark shiny green shiny, needle-like foliage. It produces oval, dark brown cones around 5cm long.
A hardy classic Mediterranean low growing pine that is good for wind-swept locations and is used often in a Japanese garden style landscapes. Suitable for planting in gardens or in larger pots and planters.
Also used widely in the art of bonsai.
Native to Europe and can be found in the Pyrenees, Alps, Erzgebirge, Carpathians, Apennines and higher Balkan Peninsula mountains.
Adaptable to a wide range of soils and conditions. Tolerant of sub-Alpine conditions.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring. Avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C
Cold stratification is recommended in climates with warm winters.
Cold treatment is not be critical for germination to occur in colder regions but should give increased germination rates.
This can be replicated by cold stratification in the refrigerator vegrtable draw for 4-6 weeks. Alternatively over wintering in the garden in cold climates will assist germination.
Germination generally occurs in 14-28 days when moved to warmer temperatures after the period of cold treatment.
