Pinus pinea has been used and cultivated for its edible pine nuts since prehistoric times.
The stone pine is also known as the Italian stone pine, Mediterranean stone pine, umbrella pine and parasol pine.
A fast-growing stately tree with a rounded flattened crown on a straight orange-brown trunk. Foliage grows in clumps high up in the branches creating the shape of an umbrella.
The seeds contained in the pine nuts, have been a delicacy since Roman times. Each cone can contain around 50 nuts.
Make an excellent specimen for larger gardens and park lands. Trees can live up to 300 years.
A hardy Mediterranean pine that requires little maintenance.
Also used in the art of bonsai.
Prefers a sandy soil and is tolerant to drought and coastal conditions.

Pinus pineais native to the Mediterranean region, occurring in Southern Europe . The species was introduced into North Africa millennia ago and is also naturalised in the Canary Islands, South Africa, and New South Wales.
