Balloon Flowers are summer-blooming cousins to the more familiar Bellflowers (Campanula)
This mix of colours produces interesting balloon-like buds burst open into star-shaped flower. This medium-height selection is great for the border or in mixed containers and are ideal good for cutting.
Prefers full sun and a rich well drained soil. Fertilise in early spring with a top dressing of compost and blood and bone.
Native to East Asia. In Korea the plant is known as “doraji” where its root is used either dried or fresh as a popular ingredient in salads and traditional cuisine. The China it is also use in traditional Chinese medicine.
Tropical: Early Autumn & Winter.
Temperate: Spring or Autumn.
Cool climate: Spring to Early Summer or Autumn.
Sow: On surface and firm gently. Do not sow deeply.
Platycodon seed should be sown in containers on the surface of the soil and pressed down gently, do not cover and the seed requires light and temperatures of 14-18°C (65-75°F) to germinate. Keep moist, transplant seedlings when the spring soil has warmed and they are large enough to handle.
