Heirloom variety used in the 19th century for making preserves, pies etc. Round fruit 4-5kg, with firm, white flesh similar to the rind of a watermelon and bright red seeds.
Long vines. Hardy and stores well.

Best sown direct early in the season. For earlier planting in cooler climates raise in pots in warm conditions and transplant after 3-4 weeks. Requires temperatures of around 18-20°C for germination.
Sow in rows 40-60cm between plants and in rows 120cm apart
If sowing direct, plant 3-4 seeds 15mm deep in mounds, later thinning to the two strongest plants.
Plant in a free-draining soil in a position with full sun.
For best results fertilise and keep well watered, keep soil moist and avoid overhead watering where possible.
Harvest after 75-90 days when the stem turns brown and begins to break away from fruit.
