Pumpkin Barbara is a new butternut variety suitable for tropical climates. The plants are adaptable and have a high yield potential.
The fruit set is excellent and covers a long bearing period. The plants’ strong vigour tends to make them less susceptible to diseases.

Due to Pumpkin Barbara’s attractive rind colour and its ability to firm up at a very early stage, immature fruit can be used as a baby vegetable.

The first fruits are harvestable as baby squashes at around 45 days after transplant. Pumpkin Barbara may be used for mature fruit production due to its exceptional quality and can be harvested around 85 – 95 days from transplant. Mature fruit weighs around 1 – 1.5 kg.

The rind colour of the immature (baby) fruit is dark green with lighter green stripes. When mature, it is medium to dark green with tan-coloured thinner stripes running from the stem base to the blossom end.

Pumpkins are a warm-season plant.

The best time to sow pumpkins in Australia

  • In temperate and cool climates, sow or plant pumpkins in spring to early summer, after the danger of frost has passed.
  • For most regions of Australia, plant pumpkins from mid-September through December.
  • In arid regions like central Australia, plant pumpkins in late spring to early summer, usually between October and December.
  • In mild zones of Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania, it is best to sow the pumpkins in spring, from September to November.

Harvest pumpkins in all climates during Autumn when the stalks dry.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate; keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
