The Kumi Kumi pumpkin is a rare ethnic heirloom variety of the Maori people from New Zealand. It produces round to oval, heavily ribbed fruit with a nutty flavour, approximately 1 to 1.5 kg and 20-30 cm across. Harvest young for use like winter squash, for the young fruit can be boiled, fried, or baked and has a rich, nutty flavour, or leave to mature for use like pumpkin. It is suitable for winter storage.

Introduced by European settlers, it has become a staple in Maori culture for many generations.

Pumpkins are a warm-season plant.

The best time to sow pumpkins in Australia

  • In temperate and cool climates, sow or plant pumpkins in spring to early summer, after the danger of frost has passed.
  • For most regions of Australia, plant pumpkins from mid-September through December.
  • In arid regions like central Australia, plant pumpkins in late spring to early summer, usually between October and December.
  • In mild zones of Victoria, South Australia, and Tasmania, it is best to sow the pumpkins in spring, from September to November.

Harvest pumpkins in all climates during Autumn when the stalks dry.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate; keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
