Pyrus calleryana is a visually stunning ornamental tree that boasts clusters of white flowers in the spring and vibrant autumn foliage in shades of yellow, mahogany, and red.
It is grown mainly for its flowers and foliage and not for its fruit.
This beautiful pear tree has a pyramidal shape when young, which becomes more rounded as it matures. Its glossy green leaves are heart-shaped and appear from the period between flowering and leaf drop.
Originating from China, Pyrus calleryana is adaptable to most soils, but it prefers an open and sunny position. It is frost-resistant but vulnerable to drought.
Cold stratification is recommended. This can be replicated by cold stratification in the refrigerator for 10-12 weeks or over wintering in the garden.
Cold climates will assist germination.
Nick seed with a sharp knife or abrade with sandpaper.
Soak seed 24 hours in water.
Sow seed 1cm deep, keep war and moist
Germination generally occurs in 21-28 days when moved to warmer temperatures after the period of cold treatment
The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22
