This species typically grows between 2 to 2.5 meters in height and is renowned for having one of the largest and most spectacular blooms among California poppies.
The flowers have large, crinkled white petals that surround bright yellow canters creating a stunning visual display. Each flower measures between 10 to 18 centimetres in diameter and attracts honeybees and other beneficial insects.
Romneya coulteri flourishes with proper watering but can be adversely affected by either too much or too little water.
Once established, it spreads rapidly through rhizomes and can easily dominate its planting area. however, controlling its spread is generally manageable by simply pulling up the shoots.
For optimal growth, plant Romneya coulteri in full sun and in well-draining sandy soil. Once established, it becomes a low-water plant that does not require additional watering during the summer months. The tree poppy thrives in warmer climates and is drought-tolerant.
Coulter's Matilija poppy is native to southern California, USA, and Baja California, Mexico. It usually grows in dry canyons within chaparral and coastal sage scrub plant communities, and it can sometimes be found in areas that have recently experienced wildfires.
