An attractive ornamental tree that looks great near water or simply as a specimen tree or grouped in the garden.
Bright green heart-shaped leaves that turn shades of yellow, red, orange and purple in autumn even in warmer climates.
In late spring spikes of tiny greenish flowers are borne at the end of the branches.
Originates from China.
Prefers light to medium well-drained soil in a protected sunny position, frost resistant but drought tender.

Cold treatment may not be critical for germination to occur in colder regions but should give increased germination rates.
This can be replicated by cold stratification in the refrigerator for 6-8 weeks. Alternatively wintering in the garden in cooler climates will assist germination.
Overwintering in the garden in cold climates:
- Soak in water overnight.
- Sow the seed 8-10mm deep.
- Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
- Ensure the mix is moist but not waterlogged.
- Leave in the garden over winter.
Cold stratification in the refrigerator:
- Place the seed in a plastic bag with some growing mix.
- Add a little water to mix to make it damp.
- Place the bagged container in the refrigerator for 6-8 weeks.
- Germination generally occurs in 14-28 days when moved to warmer temperatures after the period of cold treatment.
General note: Seeds of many plants are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Please do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
