Attractive small shrub with blue-white fan-shaped flowers occurring mid-winter to summer; later flowering can be expected in cooler regions.

Scaevola crassifolia makes a useful garden plant and is especially useful in coastal regions where the thick, fleshy leaves can withstand constant sand and salt spray.
A very useful plant for the regeneration of coastal dunes. In the natural environment, plants found in protected positions can reach around 1 metre in height; in more exposed positions are much lower growing spreading plants.

Found widely in coastal areas of Western Australia in the regions of Carnarvon, Dampierland, Esperance Plains, Geraldton Sandplains, Hampton, Jarrah Forest, Pilbara, Swan Coastal Plain, Warren, and Yalgoo.

Adaptable to most well-drained soils in an open sunny position. Tolerates full coastal exposure.

The best time to sow Scaevola is spring or early autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.

  1. Crack or cut open the outer shell to expose the embryo to allow water to ingress. Sow seed on a porous seed-raising mix and cover lightly.
  2. Place in a warm shaded or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.
  3. The growing medium should be well draining but should remain moist between watering.
  4. Germination should occur in 21-60 days depending on the temperature and conditions, germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°.

Pre-treatment of smoke is recommended for this species.
Many members of this genus are responsive to the pre-treatment of smoke. Although germination may occur without smoke treatment it has proved to be beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates in this species.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
