This Fan flower is an attractive spreading shrub that can reach up to 1.2m in height. It produces blue-white flowers from mid-winter to summer, although flowering in cooler regions may occur later.
Scaevola globulifera is highly useful for gardens, particularly in coastal regions where its thick fleshy leaves can withstand constant sand and salt spray. It is also a great choice for regenerating coastal dunes. In its natural environment, Scaevola can grow up to 1 metre in height in protected positions, but in more exposed areas, it tends to be a lower-growing spreading plant.
Widely found in coastal areas of Western Australia spanning from Geraldton to Esperance. It can adapt well to most well-drained soils and open sunny positions and can tolerate full coastal exposure.
The best time to sow Scaevola is spring or early autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.
- Crack or cut open the outer shell to expose the embryo to allow water to ingress. Sow seed on a porous seed-raising mix and cover lightly.
- Place in a warm shaded or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.
- The growing medium should be well draining but should remain moist between watering.
- Germination should occur in 21-60 days depending on the temperature and conditions, germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°.
Pre-treatment of smoke is recommended for this species.
Many members of this genus are responsive to the pre-treatment of smoke. Although germination may occur without smoke treatment it has proved to be beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates in this species.
