Scaevola thesioides is an attractive small shrub that produces blue-white fan-shaped flowers from mid-winter to summer. In cooler regions, it may flower later. These plants are great for gardens, especially in coastal regions where the thick fleshy leaves can withstand constant sand and salt spray. They are also useful in the regeneration of coastal dunes.

In their natural environment, Scaevola plants can reach around 1 meter in height when they grow in protected positions. In more exposed positions, they are much lower-growing and spreading plants.

Scaevola thesioides can be found naturally in the coastal regions of Southern Western Australia in the regions of Coolgardie, Esperance Plains, Geraldton Sandplains, Mallee, and the Swan Coastal Plain.

Scaevola is adaptable to most well-drained soils in an open sunny position and can tolerate full coastal exposure..

Seed can be sown throughout the year in many parts of Australia, but it is generally recommended to sow it in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoiding the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimal temperature for germination is around 18-22°C.
Sow the seed, use a porous seed-raising mix and cover it lightly.
Place it in a warm, shaded or semi-shaded position to avoid drying out. The growing medium should be well-draining but remain moist between watering.
Germination should occur within 21-60 days, depending on the temperature and conditions.

It is recommended to pre-treat the seed with smoke, as many members of this genus are responsive to this pre-treatment. Although germination may occur without smoke pre-treatment, it has been proven beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates in this species.

Smoke treatments are simple and can be performed by soaking the seed overnight or applying it to the surface after sowing to get good results. Smoke treatments are available by clicking here.
