An extremely hardy ornamental multi-stemmed shrub that produces a profusion of bright fragrant yellow pea-like flowers over a long period during spring and early summer.
Stems are somewhat succulent grey-green rush-like shoots with small foliage hence its common name of Broom.

Prune back after flowering.

Especially well-suited to harsh conditions including coastal exposure. Prefers free-draining soil in a sunny position, drought-tolerant.
Spartium junceum is the sole species in the genus Spartium.

Occurs naturally in the Mediterranean of Southern Europe to Northern Africa.

Grow notes:

Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C

  1. Soak in hot water overnight.
  2. Sow swollen seed 3-4mm deep. retreat those that do not swell.
  3. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  4. Ensure the mix is moist but not waterlogged.
  5. Germination generally occurs in 14-21 days.

General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
