The Malabar Spinach is a common vegetable in tropical Africa and Southeast Asia, where it originated. The thick, dark green leaves of this edible ornamental provide tasty greens throughout the summer, when traditional spinach will not grow. The mild flavour makes Red Stem equally good cooked or fresh. Many people grow Red Stem for purely ornamental purposes, but theres a lot of good eating on this productive plant.

Adaptable to most soils but prefers well drained moisture retaining soil rich in organic matter and a warm sunny sheltered position.

Sow: 10mm deep.
Sow direct or in trays of a quality seed raising mix and transplant when 5-6cm tall.
Germination:14-21 days.

Maturity: 8 weeks

Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants. Pick leaves continuously to promote new growth.
