Often referred to as Fig leaf gourd SQUASH Chilacayote produces large watermelon-like fruit up to 6kg and 20 cm in diameter with bright white mild-tasting flesh.
A very versatile species of squash, grown for its edible seeds, fruit, and greens. Flowers, shoots, and leaves can be eaten as greens. Young fruit can be cooked and eaten whole with skin and seed; mature fruit is good in jams.
A popular variety is often grown for the edible seed, each Chilacayote squash can hold up to five hundred individual black seeds.
Native to central Mexico.

Sow: 2cm deep
Best sown directly in a sunny well-drained position 3 seeds in a mound 70cm apart. Thin to the strongest two plants in each mound.
