Stenocarpus sinuatus is the best known of its genus as it is widely cultivated both in Australia and overseas. The Firewheel tree takes its name from the configuration and colour of the inflorescences in which the small flowers have a wheel-like arrangement. It is one of Australia's most spectacular trees.
The dark, glossy green leaves may be entire or lobed and up to 450 mm long. The conspicuous flower clusters are seen in summer through to autumn.

Despite its sub-tropical to tropical origin the Firewheel tree is very adaptable to a range of climates and will even succeed in dry climates if additional water is available until it is established.

The Firewheel tree occurs in nature as a tree to about 30 metres but it is usually smaller in cultivation, particularly in cooler areas.
Prefers medium to heavy well-drained soil in a protected position, drought resistant but frost tender.

Grow notes:
Viability approximately 70%.

Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-24°C for this species.

  1. Soak seed overnight in water
  2. Sow seed at a depth of 2-3mm in a seed-raising mix.
  3. Water with a fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  4. Place in a warm shaded or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.
  5. Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix.
  6. Germination generally occurs in around 10-28 days in the right conditions.

General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Please do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they are discarded.
