A distinctive showy species of Swainsona that is closely related to the Sturt' s Desert Pea (Swainsona Formosa)

Swainsona beasleyana is a trailing herbaceous perennial to 20cm with stout, hairy stems, erect leaves, and purple-blue-pink flowers on racemes 20-40 cm tall. Flowering occurs from August to September.

Pinnate leaves with 15- 23 leaflets obliquely ovate with a recurved pointed apex, 10-25-5mm.

Occurs naturally in the IBRA region of the Avon Wheatbelt, Coolgardie, Great Victoria Desert, Murchison, Nullarbor and Yalgoo in Western Australia.
It is adaptable to most sandy or gravelly loam soils in an open sunny position and is drought tolerant in drought and arid locations.

The best time to sow the seed in temperate climates is spring to early summer.

Swainsona seeds germinate readily; however, they have a hard outer coating impervious to water. To assist in the uptake of moisture for germination, the seed is best scarified by pre-treating it with hot water.

  1. Place the seed in a container, pour in just-boiled water and allow to soak overnight.
  2. Use a well-drained mix with a small amount of organic compost.
  3. Sow seed on seed at a depth of the seed width.
  4. Place in a warm shade, or semi-shaded position to avoid dying out.

Germination should occur in 7-14 days @ 18-24°C.

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
