An old heirloom variety of swede that produces globe-shaped roots with purple crowns up to 15 cm across. American Purple Top has mild yellow, fine-grained firm flesh and are best harvested in the 100-150mm range.

The fine flavoured sweet flesh turns orange when cooked. Young leaves can also be used as greens in salads and stir fries. Stores well, 90 days to maturity.

Adaptable to most good garden soils, prefers an open sunny position.

Tropical: Late-Summer to Early-Autumn.
Temperate: Late-Summer to Winter.
Cold: Late-Summer to Early-Spring.

Sow: 6 mm deep.
For best results sow direct where they are to grow
Germination: 10-14 days.
Plant space: 10 cm
Row space: 20-30cm
Maturity: 12-16 weeks

Feed with a soluble fertiliser every two weeks for stronger plants.
