A semi-deciduous tree that is native to the top end of Western Australia extending into the Northern territory the Kakadu Plum has been identified with the highest vitamin C content of any fruit in the world. It contains 3000 mg of vitamin C per 100g of fruit.
Oranges contain just 50mg of vitamin C per 100g of fruit. They are used extensively in the Bush food industry, for jams and chutneys.
Typically forms an erect stem and thick branches with broad elliptical to circular leaves 25 cm long. Fragrant creamy 5-petalled flowers occur in short terminal sprays during summer followed by pale green to yellow fruit, with a pleasant flavour.
Prefers light soil in an open sunny position, drought resistant but frost tender.
Please Note: Although many of the traditional Bush Food and Medicine plants are now commercially produced in various forms we recommend you re-search these before using them as any form of food or medicine. Some parts of the plant may not be edible or some may need to be prepared before they are safe to eat or use in any way. We do our best to describe their traditional & modern uses. It is the purchaser's responsibility to ensure they are fit for their intended use.
Grow notes:
Terminalia seeds have a hard casing, to assist germination it is best to break through that casing to allow moisture to the embryo, without this expect to wait 6 months to 2 years or more until the embryo can, absorb water and start the germination process.
This can be achieved in a number of ways, sanding with coarse sandpaper, filing with a file or cutting with a hacksaw blade.
Our preferred method is the hacksaw as it easily cuts through the hard shell.
Note: Due to the difficulty in sourcing fresh Kakadu Plum seed it is not always available cleaned and supplied as seed in the fruit. For seed in fruit soak in warm water and remove the fruit from the seed as the fruit softens.
