The Mexican Sunflower is a unique variety of sunflower that boasts beautiful, deep orange flowers that can be up to 10 cm wide. These flowers are known to attract bees and butterflies. An ideal choice for the back of the border, cutting garden, and pollinator garden.

A hardy bushy fast-growing plant with green hairy leaves and spectacular vivid orange flowers with yellow centres makes them a great addition to any garden.
Tithonia rotundifolia is a perennial sunflower, usually grown as an annual.

Adaptable to most well-draining garden soils in a sunny position. Thrives in hot, sunny climates and does best if it is allowed to dry out between deep waterings. It is also heat and drought-tolerant.

Tithonia rotundifolia is commonly known as the Mexican sunflower or red sunflower.
The Mexican sunflower is a plant in the family Asteraceae, native to the warmer and moister parts of North America and Mexico.

It is best to plant seeds in spring, after the danger of frosts has passed. Sow the seeds 1-2mm deep, and keep the growing mix warm and moist. Avoid burying the seeds too deeply or waterlogging the mix.

  1. Best sown in trays or containers just below the surface and cover lightly.
  2. If sowing in trays and transplant when large enough to handle.
  3. If mass planting as a meadow scatter seeds and rake over.

Tropical: Winter
Temperate: Spring to summer
Cold: Late spring to mid-summer.

Germination: 7-21 days at a soil temperature of 18-22°C

*Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
