This large, smooth, beefsteak variety of tomato with very meaty yellow fruits with few seeds with a delicious, rich, sweet flavour and low in acidity.

An heirloom variety of tomato developed in the 1930's by a gardener who crossed his four biggest varieties for 6 years and selected the best one which he named "Mortgage Lifter".

Scientists predict that the first relative of the wild tomato 0ccured 78,000 years ago, while the cultivated tomato originated around 7,000 years ago. The Spanish first introduced tomatoes to Europe, where they became used in Spanish food.

Tomatoes are natives of the New World and were first brought to Europe by Spanish conquistadores in the early 16th century.

Tomatoes are easy to propagate from seed.

Do not transplant seedlings or sow seeds until the last frost has passed.
Tomatoes are a warm-season crop that prefers a well-drained soil enriched with organic matter

Seeds can be sown directly into the garden, or seedlings can be raised in trays or other containers and transplanted to the garden once established.

Growing directly in the garden:

  1. Sow seeds directly in the garden 5mm deep and 50 centimetres apart, with rows 60-80 centimetres apart.
  2. Keep soil moist but never wet or dry.
  3. Seeds should germinate around 5-10 days at a soil temperature of 22-28°C.
  4. Young seedlings will need protection from pests and weather.

Growing in punnets and containers:

  1. Fill trays, punnets or containers with a good quality seed-raising mix.
  2. Sow seeds 5mm deep.
  3. Keep soil moist but never wet or dry.
  4. Seeds should germinate in around 5-10 days at a soil temperature of 21-27°C.
  5. Transplant seedlings to the garden once they have their first true leaves and are large enough to handle, typically 5-10 centimetres tall.

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lie dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist, but not too wet.
  • These grow notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region
