Used medically as a calming herb.
Valerian is used for insomnia and other disorders as an alternative to benzodiazepine drugs, and as a sedative for nervous tension, excitability, stress, and intestinal colic or cramps.
Grow notes:
Adaptable to most well-drained fertile garden soils in a sunny position,
Tropical: All Seasons.
Temperate: Early Spring and Summer.
Cold: Spring and Summer.
Sow: 5mm deep.
Sow direct or if growing on trays transplant when large enough to handle. avoid excessive root disturbance.
Germination: 10-20 days.
Plant space: 60 cm
