Grass trees are widely recognised throughout the world as being uniquely Australian.

A grass tree that typically grows to a height of 1.5 m usually with no trunk.

Xanthorrhoea brunonis flowers between October and December producing white-cream flowers. It has a tufted appearance with the leaves up to 80 centimetres long. The non-flowering part of the stem is always longer than the flowering part.
A food source for nectar eating birds, insects and butterflies when in flowers and seed-eating birds when the seed is developing.

Prefers a light well-drained soil in an open sunny position. Drought tolerant and frost resistant to -6°C

They occur naturally in the Geraldton Sandplains, Jarrah Forest, Swan Coastal Plain and Warren in Western Australia.

The first un-official name was in 1768 by DR Daniel Solander, who accompanied Joseph Banks on Caption James Cook's first voyage to the Pacific Ocean aboard HMS Endeavour
The species was first formally described by the botanist Robert Brown in 1810

The seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year.

Xanthorrhoea germinate readily from seed with no special pre-treatment.

  1. Sow seed on surface of a porous seed raising mix and cover to a depth of 1-2 mm. Do not bury seed deeply.
  2. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  3. Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out.
  4. Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix.
  5. Place the seed tray in a warm  place in the shade.Check the seed tray regularly and add moisture if it looks like it is drying out but do not waterlogg the container.

Germination generally occurs in around 10-60 days at 18-22°C

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
