Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoiding the coldest and hottest months of the year.

Xanthorrhoea germinate readily from seed with no special pre-treatment.

    1. Sow seed on surface of a porous seed raising mix and cover to a depth of 1-2 mm. Do not bury seed deeply.
    2. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
    3. Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out.
    4. Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or waterlogging the growing mix.Germination generally occurs in around 10-60 days at 18-22°C
    5. Place the seed tray in a warm  place in the shade.Check the seed tray regularly and add moisture if it looks like it is drying out but do not waterlogg the container.

Germination generally occurs in around 10-60 days at 18-22°C

Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist but not too wet.
  • These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
  • The customer should do their due diligence that they are suited to their region.
