There are six species of flowering plants, often commonly known as woody pears in Australia.

Tree or shrub, 2-8 metres high, with epicormic buds that produce cream-white flowers from December to February.

An ideal drought tolerant small tree for any hot dry situation and responds well to heavy pruning.
Prefers a light to medium well-drained soil in an open sunny position, drought resistant but frost tender when young.

Xylomelum occidentale grows in white and yellow sand on the Sandplains

Occurs naturally in the Jarrah Forest, Swan Coastal Plain and Warren in Western Australia.

The genus Xylomelum was first formally described in 1798 by James Edward Smith in Transactions of the Linnean Society of London.
The name is derived from the Greek xylon meaning "wood" and melon "tree-fruit", referring to the woody fruit family Proteaceae occurring in Australia.

Xylomelum occidentale was first described by Robert Brown in 1830.

Propagation from seed is relatively easy.

The seed is best sown when the weather warms.
Avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year

  1. Soak seed in warm water for several days until they sart to swell.
  2. Repeat if they do not swell.
  3. Sow seed at a depth of 3 to 5 milimerts  in a seed raising mix.
  4. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  5. Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out.
  6. Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out.
  7. Avoid waterlogging the growing mix as the seed is prone to damping off and the seed may rot.

Germination generally occurs in around 21-28 days at 18-26°C

* Please note:

  • Please do not be too hasty to discard seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lie dormant until the conditions are like their natural germination requirements.
  • As with all seeds, they must have adequate water to germinate, keep them moist, but not too wet.
