ZELKOVA serrata

Japanese Elm

Stock: Available

Family: Ulmaceae

Characteristics: Deciduous tree to 30 m

Seeds per packets: 25

The fast growth rate, the attractive autumn foliage colour and the ability to reduce leave size quite substantially have made this species a favourite bonsai subject.

Zelkova serrata is a highly ornamental deciduous tree with a short trunk dividing into many upright and erect spreading stems forming a broad, round-topped head. Smooth grey bark that starts to exfoliate when the tree matures. Leaves are simple and alternate, which in autumn turn yellow, then orange or red before dropping off.

Native to Japan, Korea, eastern China and Taiwan.

Very adaptable to most soil type but prefers a rich, moist well-drained soil in full sun to part shade.

Cold stratification of 30-60 days is recommended for this species. Germination may occur without stratifation but if has proved to greatly increase successful germination rates.

Although seed can be sown most of the year in Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 16-22°C

  1. Sow seed on surface of a porous seed raising mix. The seed will lodge in the the pores of the mix once watered.
  2. Sprinkle a very light covering of the seed raising mix over the seed. Do not bury seed deeply.
  3. Water with fine mist spray to avoid disturbance of the seed.
  4. Ensure the mix is moist but not water logged.
  5. Place the container in plastic bag.
  6. Place the bagged container in the refrigerator for 30-60 days.
  7. Place in a warm shaded or semi shaded position to avoid dying out.
  8. Keep warm & moist, avoid drying out or water logging the growing mix.
  9. Germination generally occurs in 21-35 days when moved to warmer temperatures after the period of cold treatment.

General note: Seeds of many plants are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.

Cold stratify in the refrigerator 30-60 days or can be over wintered in the garden in colder climates.
