Zelkova serrata is a highly ornamental deciduous tree with a short trunk dividing into many upright and erect spreading stems forming a broad, round-topped head. Smooth grey bark that starts to exfoliate when the tree matures. Leaves are simple and alternate, which in autumn turn yellow, then orange or red before dropping off.
Native to Japan, Korea, eastern China and Taiwan.
The fast growth rate, the attractive autumn foliage colour and the ability to reduce leave size quite substantially have made this species a favourite bonsai subject.
Grow notes:
Very adaptable to most soil types but prefers a rich, moist well-drained soil in full sun to part shade.
Cold stratification of 30-60 days is recommended for this species. Germination may occur without stratification but it has proved to greatly increase successful germination rates.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 16-22°C
General note: Seeds of many plants are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
