A small conifer tree 9-15 m in height with a trunk of 50 cm in diameter. Typically with a dense head of branches divided into a mass of small slender sprays of bright green foliage.
Globose cones 2 cm in diameter that open at maturity to release the seeds. The cones are persistent on the tree and can hold their seeds for several years after maturity.
A species of conifer in the Cupressaceae family native to South Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, and Tasmania although it has also naturalised in parts of Victoria and Western Australia.
Adaptable to most soil types including extremely sandy soils. Prefers an open sunny position. It is tolerant of poor soils and coastal conditions, but drought-sensitive on shallow soils.
Grow notes:
Seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoiding the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, natives will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
