An erect or rounded shrub that flowers over a long period with attractive bright-red claw-like flowers.
Flowering occurs from July to November and is followed by fruits which are woody capsules. The flowers attract nectar-feeding birds, honeybees and other insects.
The foliage is stiff, and cylindrical but not sharply pointed.
Ideal for native landscaping and sandy, windy locations.
Occurs naturally in the IBRA Regions Esperance Plains and the Swan Coastal Plain in the south of Western Australia.
Calothamnus is a genus of more than 40 species, all of which are found in Southrn Western Australia.
Prefers light alkaline well-drained soil in an open sunny position. Very hardy, drought, and frost resistant.
Calothamnus, among our native plants, are relatively easy to grow from seed.
Although Calothamnus seed can be sown year-round in many parts of Australia, the best time for sowing Calothamnus seeds is during spring to early summer in temperate climates. It is best to avoid sowing during the coldest and hottest months.
Calothamnus seeds are tiny.
Under the right conditions, germination typically occurs within 14-28 days at temperatures between 18-22°C.
