Chinese Fringe Tree
Characteristics: Deciduous Shrub or Small to Medium Tree to 20m
Seeds per packets: Approx 5
A small to medium deciduous tree that is sometimes seen as a multi-stemmed shrub that produces masses of fragrant feathery white flowers in clusters during late spring and early summer.
The green summer foliage gives way to a spectacular display of golden yellow foliage during autumn.
Popular in Europe and North America where is used extensively as an ornamental tree, a good source of food for birds, bees, insects and other wildlife.
Adaptable to most well drained soils providing there is adequate access to moisture during the hottest months. Frost tolerant but drought tender.
Although seed can be sown most of the year in Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 18-22°C
For best results warm and cold stratification is recommended. (This imitates summer and winter conditions)
Cold treatment may not be critical for germination to occur in colder regions but should give increased germination rates.
This can be replicated by cold stratification in the refrigerator for 6-8 weeks. Alternatively over wintering in the garden in cold climates will assist germination.
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
