An outstanding small clump forming European ornamental grass featuring steel-blue foliage throughout the year. Noted for its finely-textured, blue-Grey foliage which achieves a height of around 15-10cm.
The light green flowers are tinged with purple and rise above the foliage in late spring-early summer achieving a total height of 25-30cm. The flowers give way to attractive puffy wheat like seed heads.
Festuca glauca is a very popular grass in modern garden design and looks great in mass plantings.
Prefers a well-drained moist soil in a sunny position for the best foliage colour. Tolerant of drought and dry or low nutrients soils but preforms best with regular watering.
Grow notes:
Although seed can be sown most of the year in many parts of Australia seed is generally best sown in spring or autumn in temperate climates, avoid the coldest and hottest months of the year. The optimum germination temperature for germination is around 15-25°C for this species.
General note: Seeds of many natives are dormant and require specific conditions or pre-treatment for germination.
Do not be too hasty to discard seed that does not germinate, seeds will often lay dormant until the conditions are similar to their natural requirements for germination to occur. Containers put to one side will often surprise long after they were discarded.
