Grevillea belongs to the ancient plant family Grevilleoideae, which split into two subfamilies, Proteoideae before the separation of the Gondwanaland continent around 140 million years ago.
The prostrate variety of Grevillea crithmifolia growing to a height of around 60 cm with a 2 spread that make a useful hardy dense weed suppressing ground cover. Compactly shaped with light green needle like leaves 2.5 cm long.
White flowers with a tinge of pink occurring in short dense clusters appearing in a profusion late winter and spring.
Adaptable to most soils and conditions, frost and drought resistant.
They occur naturally in the Swan Coastal Plain in Western Australia.
The genus Grevillea was first formally described in 1809 by Joseph Knight from an unpublished manuscript by Robert Brown
The best time to sow Grevillea seed is autumn or spring; avoid the hottest and coldest months of the year in cool temperate climates.
There are two main methods to assist germination.
Pre-treatment of smoke: Not considered critical for this species but may be beneficial.
Many members of the Proteaceae are responsive to pre-treatment of smoke. Although germination will often occur without smoke treatment it has proved to be beneficial in reducing the number of days to germination and increasing germination rates in many species.
Smoke treatments are simple and can be undertaken either by soaking the seed overnight or by applying it to the surface after sowing, both provide good results. Smoke treatments are available by clicking here.
