Hakea salicifolia is typically a large bushy shrub or small tree 5-8 metres with flat elliptical ”Willow” type leaves 12 cm long.

White flowers occur in the leaf axils from late winter to spring in its native environment. Flowers are followed by large woody seed pod 2 cm long containing 2 seed.

A neat compact plant that can be cultivated in a range of climates and is especially successful in temperate and sub-tropical climates.

Previously known as Hakea saligna the Willow-Leaved Hakea is endemic to NSW and Queensland.

Suitable for growing in coastal conditions. Adaptable to most soil types, prefers an open sunny position but will tolerate part shade.

Hakea belongs to the ancient plant family Proteaceae, which split into two subfamilies, Grevilleoideae in Australia and Proteoideae in South Africa, before the separation of the Gondwanaland continent around 140 million years ago.

The best time to sow Hakea is spring.

  • Sow the seeds into a tray of well-drained coarse sand and vermiculite seed-raising mix.
  • Do not sow too deep; they only need to be covered with a small amount mix.
  • Keep the mix moist but not saturated.
  1. Germination should occur in 14-42 days, depending on the temperature and conditions.

Pre-germination of seeds by sowing into a closed container containing moist vermiculite or similar material is also useful, particularly for winter sowing when outdoor temperatures may be unsuitable.

Germination usually occurs in 1-2 weeks using this method, and when the root has reached about a centimetre or so in length, the seedling can be placed into a small pot of seed-raising mix.

*Please note:
• Please do not be too hasty in discarding seeds that do not germinate; seeds will often lay dormant until conditions are like their natural germination requirements.
• All seeds must have adequate water to germinate; keep them moist but not too wet.
• These growth notes are provided as guidance only and do not guarantee successful germination.
• Customers should do their due diligence and ensure they are suited to their region.
